What's the smell of clean?

Click to enlarge on FeaturepicsI once heard someone say that clean shouldn’t smell anything and therefore there is no need for cleaning products with fragrance in them. This might be true, but there are certainly some smells that smell clean to me. Lemon and green apples are smells that get me thinking of something fresh and clean. The smell of a warm sauna and newborn birch leaves does makes me think of clean, newly washed hair and light summer nights. And then there is the smell that no fragrance have ever been able to reproduce;  the smell of the first spring day and a newly made bed with clean sheets. We have a clothes wringer in our laundry room and I love the smell and feeling of wrinkle free bed linen.

Do you think there is a special smell for clean and what smell is that?

I’ve been waiting for one of these thought provoking posts! I love the way you see things Susie! When I think of clean I think of the smell of lialcs on a springtime breeze or a baby fresh out of the bath…simple moments that bring forth a warm feeling that bubbles up from within!

For me it is the smell of rain. In where I come from it doesn’t rain that often but when it does, there is a nice smell in the air that makes me feel that the world has been thoroughly washed and finally the air is clean.
A really nice thought Susie :) I wish everyone can see the things the same way you do.

The smell of freshly cut grass gives me the most relaxing, calming effect!

Probably, that reminds me of God’s creation — nature, man and rest in Him.

Thanks for sharing in such an unique way!

I love smells, but I honestly don’t think i associate one smell or another with“clean”. Maybe because nothing in my world ever is…LOL
    I love lemons
    and rain
but they remind me of moments,
how strange…gonna have to figure this one out!
    Thanks Suzie!

It doesn’t happen often, but there have been very warm summers without a drop of rain in Finland too, and when this happens it feels like the rain cleans everything and the air gets a fresh, clean feel.

I like the smell of freshly cut grass too. Freshly cut grass and an ice cream cone reminds me of my childhood summers.

I’m not the one who’s known to clean too often, that’s why I guess I’ve noticed what clean smells like.

I used to think that ammonia smelled clean too, but I’ve become sensitive to some smells and now ammonia just gives me a headache.

Someone above said rain … I’d add that smell just after thunderstorms — I think is has something to do with ozone.

While Vanilla doesn’t necessarily remind me of clean, I’d buy any cleaning product that smelled like it.

Sweet white vanilla, you are right, it doesn’t make me think of clean, but it is a yummy smell. Clean your kitchen with white vanilla and it will smell like ice cream or cookies… I’d buy that too :)

Morning dew is nice to photograph too, even though it is a little bit of a challenge to get the pictures perfect.

lemon smells clean to me too, but I have to admit I really never liked the smell of lavender. Too much lavender gives me a headache

I live in the redwood forests and the smell of clean to me is the damp, mossy, ferny biomass that may not be clean in the housekeeping sense … but is pure. To me, it’s the smell of pure.

The smell of clean should be a smell of nothing. You just want to be able to smell fresh air.
