I promised to post soon, but every time I try to something or someone needs my attention. I’ve read probably a hundred books, reports and papers the last couple of months, and I still got a lot more to read. I’m trying to get 2 years of studying done in one year and I’m going to write my thesis during the summer too; all this while I work full time. I would like to post more, but there is not enough hours in the day for me to do that.
There are days I’m amazed of the amount of words you can fit in one head, especially since I’m not that young anymore. Well, I have noticed I have to take a lot more notes than I used to, but I type faster now, so I don’t mind. They say it’s harder to learn something new when you get older, but I doubt it. I found it to be a lot easier to learn new things now, than when I was younger. I might not remember everything as easy I used to, but I understand it better. And I’m more disciplined than I used to be.
What do you think! Is it a myth that it’s more difficult to learn new things when you get older? Or does it only require different study methods?

I’d heard that it is more difficult to learn things as we age, but that we retain the information longer after we do.
I agree with what you say — maybe the fact we’re more disciplined now that we’re older so learning seems easier. I’ve been trying to brush up on my French and notice that some of the rules we learned in HS (that made no sense to me) are a lot easier to understand now.

Hopefully the information will retain longer
When I’m ready with my bachelor I’m going to continue with a master and I would just hate it if I forgot all I’ve read so far.
Good luck with your French classes!

More people said that. I think it does matter on some aspects. Because when we get older, our energy level dropped and compared when we are young, our mind can grasp easily the information. But it depend on the the person, on how he/she would handle the situation.

Maybe it has something with our energy levels; being able to stuff a lot of information in your head at once is certainly not something that comes easy when you get older. But I guess life experience makes it easier to relate information to something we’ve learned earlier.

I actually have discovered that I learn better now that I am older! I truly believe it is because I want to learn and it is a subject I chose.
Good luck with your studies and thesis!

Thank you! I guess it’s easier to understand the benefits with education when you have worked many years on a low salary with few opportunities to advance

I think I learn better now..a lot less distractions for one thing. I also agree with new zealand travel..I want to learn and the subject is my choice.
Good luck with everything…you will do fine. Just remember to breathe!

Thank you, gypsy-heart. I will try to remember to breath, even though I have to admit I forget to do that at times.

I think it’s easier now.
Now that I am a Junior in college, studying comes more naturally for me. In high school and during my freshman year, I didn’t care as much as I do now. I had the hardest time concentrating and taking everything in. I’m getting ready to graduate now so I am much more focused and mature. It plays a HUGE role in my work ethic and study habits!

Hi Susie! I think if we continually learn new things in many areas consistently throughout life, we don’t lose our mental edge. Many young people stop learning after a certain age and don’t keep their brains in shape. If you don’t use it, you lose it! I confess, I am addicted to learning and do it endlessly. However, I understand the ego and how it can cloud the mind. I see the world through a child’s eyes. I keep my cup empty and mind open to learning anything new.

You are right, we have to continue learning throughout life. I guess that is true even more now when the world changes so much.
