I have to write an essay for an academic writing course and suddenly my mind is blank. Even though I write a blog and therefore am able to at least once in a while come up with subjects to posts about, I have found that writing a paper or an essay at school is a lot easier when the subject is given by the teacher. I could write an essay about the same subject as my thesis, but my thesis will be written in Finnish and the essay should be written in English, which means I would have to try to find the right English terms for many terms I only know the Finnish words for.
I think I will write something about the E-words and the acronyms used in modern business, but I’m not sure. I need to make up my mind before Monday, and here I am changing my mind all the time. Have to admit it is a lot easier to hand out subjects as a teacher than to find one as a student.
Have you ever been in a situation where you wished someone would just tell you what to write about instead of giving you free hands to write about anything?

Good luck!

I experience that most of the time. Because it’s much easier to write a topic that is already provided. Well, good luck with your essay, I’m sure you’ll come up with great topic.

Yes. It is almost too much freedom…especially when you have a deadline (which I really dislike).
Though I must admit, I tend to do better under pressure.
Looking forward to hearing more!

I can totally identify with what you are going through…funny thing though is when I am given the subject I get all screwed up and wish that “I” could pick the subject…that’s just me though never satisfied either way…lol

You’ve probably already finished your essay, but great advice when it comes to writing is just start writing. Even if it’s garbage, write some stuff down. It’ll get you thinking and something good will pop into your head.

It is a lot easier when you have a guiding hand on what you should be writing about.

Oh boy this brought back memories of Comp 1 and 2 class. But I have to agree with you. When given a topic there’s no choice, you get right to work on research and thinking. When it’s up in the air too much time is spent on the perfect title. Something tells me you will do a great job either way!

It is easier when you are given them subject to write about. Easier if it is something you have a breath and depth of knowledge about. I prefer creative writing. I’m just glad that I’m out of school, lol.

Hi Susie,
This may sound a little obvious but a friend of mine had a similar mental block a while ago.
We just came up with 5 topics and sent him on his way. Sometimes you just need a little structure and some guidelines to get the creative juices going.
